Driving License Category A2

The A2 category of driving license permits you to operate motorcycles without sidecars, with a maximum engine output of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the motorbike cannot exceed 0.2kW/kg.

This driving licence is designed to permit you to get your small motorcycle driving licence early and then progress to the A2 licence, which has more engine power.

Motorcycles and scooters

Driving license category A2 is the second level of motorcycle driving licence. It permits the use of small-sized motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum capacity of 125cc. The goal of the class is to allow you to slowly ascend the ladder of power and to savor the possibility of an even bigger one. The test is more challenging and requires more understanding.

The category A2 driver's license is valid until the age of 24. It can be used in conjunction alongside a car driving licence category A1 or as a part of a provisional category B driver's license. If you are older than 24 years old, however, the full category B driving license is required to drive motorcycles with a power output of more than 35 kW.

You can get your group A1 license at 16 years old (in Denmark, Malta, and Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic; in Germany, Hungary, Iceland and in the following countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Poland). Once you reach the age of 16 you'll need to pass the A2 category motorbike test. You must pass the test prior to turning 18. After two years, you can move to category A.

After passing the test in category A2, you're allowed to drive a motorcycle, either with or without a sidecar, and vehicles that have up to 35 kW of power. The vehicles must also have a weight/power ratio of no more than 0.2 kg/kW and must not be derived from a vehicle that has twice the maximum power.

If you have passed a two-part moped or lower category motorcycle test from the 1st of July 1996, then you can skip the theory test and take the practical test. You can ride a smaller moped or scooter that has L plates or get the new AM licence, which will enable you to ride up to 50cc bikes with a top speed of 45mph. The AM licence is only valid if you have taken the test in your theory and have completed nine hours of training divided into theory and practical instruction at driving schools.

Motor vehicles with 4 wheels

This category covers all motor vehicles with four wheels that are not passenger cars or buses. It also includes utilitarian vehicles like vans, pickups and panels. Campers, motorhomes and lorries are also included. This category also includes vehicles like ambulances, hearses, and carryalls that are made to transport eight or more people or have a maximum mass of 750kg or greater. Drivers who have obtained an A1 licence may operate vehicles of this kind with trailers that have the maximum authorized mass of up to 750kg.

You must pass the theory test to be able drive a vehicle in this category. To pass, you have to attend 12 lessons lasting 90 minutes of the base material and an additional 4 lessons of 90 minutes each for the add-on (category A2). The test for the theory has an average score of 70%.

Motor vehicles with 5 or more wheels

This category includes power-driven vehicles that are designed for use on the road, and for transport of passengers or goods. They must have at minimum two or three wheels in contact with the ground as well as a saddle or seat for the driver and passengers, and an engine that can produce speeds of 20 miles per hour or more. These vehicles are equipped with brakes and a steering wheel. They also have the ability to be controlled in a normal direction, and can also travel in reverse. In certain instances, the hood of these vehicles can be opened. In the past, this term has been been applied to trucks (van mini-van, mini-van, panel, pickup, sport utility) and busses that carry 16 or more passengers. The category A2 driving licence can be used to drive a motorized cycle, moped or motorcycle.
